EARN & LEARN is a summer youth employment program initiated by Mayor Tom Barrett in partnership with local business, non-profit, and community- and faith-based organizations.


This year SOC is celebrating its 30th anniversary of service to the near Southside and wider community, there is the US Census & there are local and national elections – this is the year to join us in making an impact! 


SOC OVERALL JOBS DESCRIPTION

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: full-time, part-time, temporary, and permanent positions available; many positions are grant funded as is typical for most nonprofits; and Wisconsin is an at-will employment state where either the employee or employer may end employment without notice or reason

HIRE DATE:  Current positions to be hired as soon as a matching candidate is selected. Please respond immediately and by the dates listed in the employment opportunities list. SOC is constantly recruiting and interviewing for new positions, vacancies, and to keep candidate leads prepared for unexpected opportunities.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: SOC is committed to at least a minimum living wage of $15 per hour for all permanent employees (youth/student/intern/trainee wages/stipends may be lower). Most positions fall within a salary range from $15 to $25 per hour (with some positions qualifying for performance bonuses). Salary is based on the range and in consideration of the requirements and the track record of demonstrated achievements for the position. 

A generously subsidized individual health insurance is offered with options for employee to add on family insurance. A generous paid time off package is provided (including two weeks of vacation, 12 PTO days, and holidays).

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ALL STAFF

  • ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES: Fulfill your job role and responsibilities meeting goals and deadlines with a high level of integrity, responsibility, transparency, communication, cultural competence, peace-making, problem solving, willingness to receive and give constructive feedback, and learning and sharing 
  • AMBASSADOR: Conduct yourself as an ambassador for SOC at all times upholding the principles of social justice and the organization
  • MISSION: Align all efforts to the mission of the organization through the three key strategies of grassroots organizing (including civic engagement), leadership development, and community development
  • CENTER RESIDENTS: Keep the interests of near Southside residents at the center of all work, build and maintain relationships with residents, focus on their personal and group leadership, and advocate for them when needed 
  • SERVICE RESIDENTS & OTHERS: Constantly reach out to and engage residents (and as a secondary priority to other key stakeholders and collaborators) and assist them with their concerns, dreams and needs with the utmost customer service, respect, inclusivity, welcoming of differences including language, sensitivity to personal and community issues.
  • TEAM: Actively participate with the staff team (and collaborators) in achieving individual, team and full staff goals, reports and deadlines

CORE REQUIREMENTS:

  • INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to engage residents (and other stakeholders), peers, and full staff team with an inclusive and welcoming approach to diverse populations
  • SOCIAL JUSTICE & DEVELOPMENT: Passion for social justice through grassroots organizing (including civic engagement), leadership development and/or community development
  • SOUTHSIDE: A strong history and/or connection to Milwaukee’s near Southside, second to that, to a similar community/environment
  • WORK STYLE: Extremely responsible/dependable, goal and deadline oriented, motivated initiator/self-starter, problem-solver, high productivity, focused/on-task, flexible, and independent worker who is also team-player
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Many positions require several hours of standing/sitting/walking/stairs in various Milwaukee weather conditions, and minimum of a 50 lb. lift
  • ORGANIZATION: Excellent organizational skills, detail oriented, planner, ability to manage/coordinate, schedule, high time management, and multi-tasker
  • COMMUNICATION: Strong ability to communicate consistently, concisely, and in a timely manner via several mediums including verbally, public speaking in small and large groups, in writing including reports, and digitally
  • (Coordinators & Managers) VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT: Ability to develop and lead individual and volunteer team/s and to determine when to complete and when to delegate functions and tasks
  • (Coordinators & Managers) TECHNOLOGY: Competent use of computer, Microsoft software products, online navigation including social media, and standard office equipment
  • (Coordinators & Managers) FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE: Most positions require ability to work a combination of weekday, week-ends, days and evenings. Full-time roles generally work 40-45 hrs. per week with a few peak times in the year requiring longer work weeks. SOC offers some flexibility in work hours to accommodate personal and family needs
  • TRANSPORTATION: Most positions must have travel requirements, must continuously maintain a valid driver’s license and reliable and insured transportation, and may need to transport other persons
  • (Some – see specific jobs) LANGUAGE ABILITIES: Many positions require or prefer bilingual ability in English/Spanish. Other prevalent languages spoken on near Southside including American Sign Language are a plus (see individual job description for any language requirements)
  • (Organizers) MILWAUKEE RESIDENCY: Some positions must comply with a SOC funding source requiring residency in the City of Milwaukee during entire tenure of work
